As practice wound down Thursday, Saskatchewan Roughriders special teams coordinator Kent Mowgery was bustling around the field.

Maugeri watches the Riders kick and return game. The units that see the most of the list play a role.

“I think you’re just trying to get a win, like all I do is just try to be the best teacher I can be,” Moughery said after Thursday’s practice.

“The players, what they put on tape is essentially me. I hold them to a high standard, but I want to teach these guys and give them the tools to go out there and be successful,” Moughery said.

He said he discusses key decisions with head coach Corey Mays throughout the game.

“We support special teams play, whether it's somebody who's a key player on special teams or a starter on offense or defense that's doing everything they can to get their teammates on special teams. We support those kinds of efforts,” Roughriders head coach Corey Mays said.

Moughery joined the Roughriders in 2016. He is the longest serving member of the coaching staff. He spent time on the home sideline at old Mosaic Stadium.

Hired by Chris Jones as an offensive assistant from Lindenwood University in Missouri, Maugery was tapped by former Riders coach Craig Dickenson to lead special teams in 2022.

The Riders' longest-serving coach finally makes it to the Gray Cup.

Ahead of Sunday's big game, CBC sat down with Saskatchewan Roughriders special teams coordinator Kent Maugeri. The Roughriders will play the Montreal Alouettes in the 112th Gray Cup.

Now on his third head coach in 10 seasons, Maugeri has experienced change and earned praise from his current boss.

“I fucking love this man,” Mays said.

“He's incredible. He's a great guy. Amazing sense of humor. He coaches tough, and I think the special teams unit is a reflection of him and his personality.”

Dogs in a landfill

Maugeri was asked if his unit was different from offense to defense.

“Yes, of course we are different. Our motto is “dogs in the dump.” Our guys have to run and hit. This is high-speed contact.”

Several Saskatchewan Roughriders are sharing memorable moments as they prepare to play in the Gray Cup. The Riders will face the Montreal Alouettes in the Canadian Football League championship on Sunday at 6:00 pm ET in Winnipeg.

In the locker room after Ryder's victory, Moughery presents the special teams standout with a chain reminiscent of the 1980s Junkyard Dog professional wrestlers.

The Florida native hopes to present the chain to the winning Riders special teams player on Sunday night.
