Original Mean Girls it's obviously a classic – and Lizzy Caplanperformance as Janice Ian This is one of the reasons why the film has survived to this day.
However, as it turns out, Lizzie's role was never a foregone conclusion. During a recent appearance at Destroyed In the podcast, the actress revealed that she had to fight to get the role during the “really, really long” audition process: “It was just the funniest script I've ever read.
Lizzie explained that everyone who went through the audition process had to first try out for the two main roles – Cady (Lindsay Lohan) and Regina George (Rachel McAdams) – before “sorting” for callbacks. “I walked in and they resisted my casting,” she said.
Lizzie then revealed that originally none other than Kelly Osbourne was the studio's original choice for the role of Janice. But with the help of a Canadian hairdresser, Lizzie recreated the role's iconic look to land the role once and for all.
“We went to Hollywood Boulevard and put on dark wigs and whatever, so we could send them screenshots of me looking like a goth kid,” she recalled.
“I don't remember how long the process took, but I remember getting the call and where I was when they called me and told me I got the part. How many times has this actually happened to you in your career: you just want to celebrate and it’s just exciting?”
