Lions fire offensive co-ordinator Morton after one season

The Detroit Lions are changing their coaching staff.

Detroit fires offensive coordinator John Morton after just one season the team announced on Tuesday.

Morton was hired to replace Ben Johnson, who left the Lions to coach the rival Chicago Bears last offseason. Johnson led the Bears to an 11–6 record and the NFC North title in his first season.

Morton was the Lions' offensive tackle for the first two months of the NFL season, but head coach Dan Campbell took over that responsibility in early November following a loss to the Minnesota Vikings.

The Lions had a 5–3 record with Morton as the starter. They finished the season 9–8, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2022.

Morton has more than two decades of coaching experience with Denver, Detroit, Las Vegas, New York Jets, New Orleans and San Francisco. He was Denver's passing game coordinator for two seasons before being hired by Campbell.

The Lions ranked fifth in the NFL in total offensive yards this season. Quarterback Jared Goff was second in passing yards with 4,564, trailing only former Lion and now Ram Matthew Stafford.

Campbell said Monday he has not yet decided whether he will continue calling games next season.
