It's been a huge year for Spotifyand now all that's left is the upcoming arrival of Spotify Wrapped 2025, but the platform is staying tight-lipped about when it will release for now. With that said, now is the time to look back at one of the busiest years for best music streaming service.
From the highly anticipated arrival of Spotify Lossless to features like Spotify Mix and Messages, the platform has seen some major changes, dropping one huge feature after another. What's your favorite new addition to the app? Let us know in the comments.
1. Lossless Spotify
Of all the updates released over the past year, Spotify Lossless is the big kahuna that the company began rolling out on September 10 across a variety of devices from mobile to desktop to tablets, offering compatibility with devices that support Spotify Connect, including SonyBose, Sennheiser and others.
For five years, Spotify subscribers have been patiently waiting for Lossless to arrive, but Spotify has remained silent on its status, leading to many rumors. One suggested that Spotify Lossless would come as a paid add-on called Music Pro, but to our surprise, it's included with the Premium subscription.
2. Spotify Mix
When Apple Automix dropped the music, Spotify has released its own audio mixing tool for your playlists – and this is by far my favorite feature the platform has introduced.
Spotify Mix lets you create smooth transitions between songs in your playlists, adding another layer of personality to your soundtracks. You can experiment with EQ settings and effects, or simply select a preset and play with it to make it easy to navigate all your DJ abilities.
3. Smart filters
While Spotify is my favorite music streaming service, I've been open about how poor and cluttered its interface is. His Smart filters Organize your library by organizing your saved music into three broad categories: Actions, Moods, and Genres.
The Activities category displays presets like “Running,” “Party,” and even “Crying,” while in Moods, Spotify focuses on the “vibe” of your listening experience with categories like “Feel Good” and “Gentle.”
4. Messages
DMs in the app launched on Spotify in Augustallowing you to share music, podcasts, and audiobook recommendations with friends directly within the Spotify app, rather than having to send links to other platforms.
Your message history will be stored in your profile section in the top left corner of the app, and when you accept a message request, you can react with emojis and send text messages.
5. Discover the Weekly Overhaul
To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the first personalized music discovery feature, Spotify gives its Discover Weekly playlist a much-needed shine. In addition to the new visual update, new controls allow you to search across five different genres based on your listening history. Depending on which genre you choose, a 30-track playlist will be created that will take you one step closer to your next favorite song or artist.
6. Upcoming Releases Center
Spotify Upcoming Releases Center Great for keeping track of your most anticipated new releases and has become one of my favorite features since Daylists launched.
Essentially, it's an in-app space where you can browse your top 10 pre-saved albums and see recommendations based on your listening habits that you can pre-save to your library. You can also use this hub to quickly access album countdown pages to view the track list, listen to singles, check out products, and watch videos.
7. AI DJ Requests
Two years after the launch of AI DJ Spotify releases first major update in the form of voice queries.
In addition to creating a personalized listening experience based on your past and present music habits, the AI DJ will listen to your requests and then create a listening session based on what you want to hear in real time, using prompts like “Play me some electronic beats for my afternoon run.”
In recent months, AI DJ has also rolled out the ability to print queries and choose personalized suggestions suggested by Spotify.
8. Disable smart shuffle
Smart shuffle was annoying for a number of reasons, but mainly because Spotify had a habit of turning it on without our knowledge, but that's now a problem of the past.
While you can disable Smart Shuffle by tapping the various shuffle options on the music playback screen, this is never guaranteed to disable Smart Shuffle completely. If you go to Settings and Playback, you can scroll down to “Enable Smart Shuffle in Playback Modes” and disable the toggle to avoid starting again.
9. Concerts near you
Earlier this year, Spotify made it easier for you to find touring artists in your area with Playlist “Concerts near you”. Updated every Wednesday based on your listening habits, the playlist features 30 fresh songs from artists with shows scheduled in your area, and even allows you to access links that will redirect you to third-party booking platforms to purchase tickets.
10. Podcast updates
Spotify's focus on expanding the reach of its podcast collection has waxed and waned significantly this year. three new podcast updates.
The first was the new Podcast Subscriptions feed on the homepage, a special place that shows all the podcasts you're already subscribed to. This is followed by podcast recommendations under your home feed labels, which you can easily save to your library as well as the “In This Episode” section. For example, if an author mentions a specific album, song, or audiobook in a podcast episode, those titles will appear in that section and you'll have the opportunity to explore said content.
11. Hide the New button
It was a quiet move on Spotify's part, but the vast majority of subscribers were very grateful. The Create button caused quite a stir when Spotify added it instead of the Library tab, mainly because it interferes with users' muscle memory, but Spotify has since come up with a solution to the problem. remove it from the navigation bar.
To remove the Create button, go to Settings in the Spotify app and tap Content & Display. There you can find a toggle to disable the Create button under the Display Settings subheading.
12. Eliminate certain songs from your taste profile.
You've been able to exclude playlists from your taste profile for a long time, but it was only recently that Spotify introduced a new feature that lets you exclude certain songs, which is perfect for eliminating those guilty pleasures from your Spotify Wrapped.
To exclude a song from your taste profile, find the track you want to exclude (in an album or playlist) and tap the three dots next to it. Then all you have to do is scroll down and select “Exclude track from your taste profile” and Spotify will do the rest.
