RB Leipzig published a statement on social media together with Magdeburg, detailing the incident as follows:

“We were all looking forward to a wonderful evening playing the cup under the floodlights, but unfortunately it was overshadowed by sad news.
“We regret to inform you that a fan of 1. FC Magdeburg, who had to be resuscitated before the game, died in hospital.
“We would like to express our sincere condolences to their families and friends and wish them strength during this difficult time.
“Out of respect for the family, we will keep live coverage on our club channels to a minimum. At times like these, football takes a backseat.”
After the game, RB Leipzig coach Ole Werner also reflected on the heartbreaking turn of events and expressed his sympathies to the man's family.

“Of course, when someone is resuscitated, this completely fades into the background, and the support, of course, is different.
“Unfortunately, after the game we learned that he did not survive. Very, very sad – our condolences to the family,” Werner added.
