The new Batman from Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is feeling the weight of joining the list of actors who will take on the role of the caped crusader.
Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a strange hybrid adventure. Instead of retelling Batman's story through a movie retelling, he instead pulls elements from Batman's history – such as the penguin chase in The Batman or Heath Ledger's Joker – to create an original story told in the open world of Gotham, similar to the Arkham series. And for this reason, instead of using clips from the films, TT Games brought in Final Fantasy 16 and Xenoblade Chronicles 3 actor Shai Matheson for the role.
“I've been a Batman fan my whole life, so I feel like it's all in my veins. I've been watching these movies since I was probably too young. “Batman Returns is my favorite movie of all time, regardless of Batman,” Matheson explained in an interview with GamesRadar+.
Matheson, who says, “Michael Keaton has always been a Batman fan of mine,” explains, “I think it was in me from the beginning.” Despite being a lifelong Batman fan, Matheson studied the scrolls. “I watched everything before I did it – I watched all the films, I watched a lot of music videos. YouTube different things, different Arkham videos, just trying to immerse myself.”
When asked how he felt about joining the list of iconic names to play the role, Matheson replied: “First of all, the voice of Kevin Conroy is the best candidate of all time. So it's very scary.” He adds that he is “horrified to join this list of people who have contributed their voices and their acting talent to this game and this character.”
But despite his concerns, Matheson is “incredibly proud to be doing this. I feel like a winner of the competition just by participating in it.”
James Gunn says Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight will allow players to experience the character “perhaps more fully than ever before.”
