Lakers star LeBron James says a Texas state trooper should be punished after he was seen on video pushing past two South Carolina Gamecocks players on Sunday and then yelling at them.
The video shows a group of four Gamecocks players emerging from a tunnel onto the field as a state trooper enters the stadium. The officer rushes between the two players, then turns and points accusingly at them, shouting at them.
James shot at the cop, writing, “This A&M cop should be suspended! This was intentional and corny! He went out of his way to start some shit. Do better man.”
LOOK:
It is unknown what was said. Did one or both players say something nasty to the officer who called him? Did the officer overreact? It's impossible to say.
ESPN reports that the officer was removed from the stadium.
“The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is aware of an incident that occurred during the Texas A&M football game today,” the department said in a public statement. “The DPS officer involved was sent home after the game. Our Office of Inspector General (OIG) is also aware of the incident and will continue to investigate. No additional information will be released at this time.”
ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith put aside his feud with James long enough to agree with the NBA star.
“Damn right! Totally agree,” First take the owner wrote. “The officer deliberately confronted two players – specifically Nick Harbor – extended his arms, then turned around and walked aggressively towards Harbor. The brother was in uniform, had just scored a goal. The officer knew he was one of the players. Damn right he should be suspended.”
This isn't the first time LeBron James has targeted a white police officer. In 2021, he raised eyebrows after published a photo on social media of a white police officer with the threatening caption “You’re next.”
James eventually deleted the post.
The incident did not appear to affect the Gamecocks. Texas A&M came back to beat South Carolina 31-30 and remains undefeated at 10-0.
