Larian is using generative AI, confirms CEO, but Divinity won’t contain anything AI-generated

Larian uses generative artificial intelligence in its game development process, but CEO Sven Vincke has confirmed that the studio's new Divinity game will not include anything created by artificial intelligence.

Vincke discussed the topic of artificial intelligence with Bloombergfollowing announced last week at The Game Awards its new game Divinity. This is the studio's next project after the extremely successful Baldur's Gate 3which was a particularly extensive game.

Thus, the studio is counting on artificial intelligence for its sequel, but Vincke confirmed that this did not lead to significant improvements in efficiency. Larian uses artificial intelligence tools to explore ideas, enhance internal presentations, develop concept art and write filler text, Bloomberg reported.

Thus, in Divinity, “everyone is a human actor; we write everything ourselves,” Vincke said.

And although the use of artificial intelligence has caused some resistance within the company, Vincke believes that “at this point everyone in the company is more or less on board with how we are using it.”

Larian aims to reduce Divinity's development time and complete production in less time than Baldur's Gate 3. One potential tool is artificial intelligence, while another develops Divinity's quests and storylines in parallel rather than linearly. The studio is also growing in size.

“I think a lot of founders have the same problem,” Vincke said. “I have to be big, otherwise I won’t be able to create my own video game. With growth suddenly comes a whole new set of responsibilities that you never thought you'd ever have, but you have them and you make the best of them. Size exposes you to new challenges you never knew existed.”

Returning to GDC last year, Vincke discussed the topic of artificial intelligence with Eurogamer. “So we definitely don’t see this as replacing developers,” he said. “But we see it as something that allows us to do more.”

He continued: “I see it as an additional tool to put on top of what's in the game. And we, of course, are conducting experiments with this. But, as I said, it is still far from being usable in that sense.”

In the same interview with Bloomberg Vincke called Larian's upcoming Divinity game “we've been unleashed.”confirming that it will be a turn-based RPG.

Earlier this week A current-gen update was released for Larian's previous game Divinity: Original Sin 2.available now at Switch 2PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
