Warning: spoilers for Landman Episode 2 of season 2 is ahead.
As if life couldn't get worse for Tommy (Billy Bob Thornton) Landman, Season 2 has started. Season premiere of the series Paramount+ The show is in full swing with Kami (Demi Moore) officially became the owner of M-Tex after the death of her husband Monty (Jon Hamm).
Cooper (Jacob Lofland) suddenly made a lot of money. Taking out a loan to buy an oil rig, his ability to guess literally struck out the slippery gold. All of the places he has chosen to mine have “hit” – in layman's terms, this means that they are producing enough oil to make him millions.
There are only two problems standing in his way: Cooper unknowingly took out a loan from his archenemy Tommy Galino (Andy Garcia), and because of this, his girlfriend Ariana (Paulina Chavez) broke up with him.
'I could hardly hold back my tears' when Cooper told Tommy he loved him, says Billy Bob Thornton
On his way to visit his estranged father TL (Sam Elliott) and the funeral home handling his mother's death, Tommy makes a detour to Cooper after his son calls for help. They then drive to TL together and have a serious heart-to-heart in the truck.
Tommy seeing TL again after such a long time scares him by telling Cooper how difficult it is to break the cycle of abuse as a parent. “The type of parent you have is the son you raise,” Tommy tells Cooper as a warning for helping raise Ariana’s young child.
In response, Cooper tells his father that he loves him, adding, “You tried your best, and that's enough for me.” Tommy subtly tries to fight back tears, and, as it turns out, these tears were completely sincere.
“It means so much in that moment,” Thornton tells me. “Jacob and I haven’t really discussed it. In general, this is how it is on this set. We let everything happen naturally. The script actually says that I'm trying to hold back my tears. I'm like, “Usually in the stage directions you say, 'Well, I don't do that.' If I don't feel it, I don't do it.
“But I had a hard time resisting them enough to not turn into a crying idiot, so it was very easy to finish the job. Jacob grew up an hour and a half later than where I grew up in Arkansas, and my child and I share a lot of similarities in our upbringing. In the show, I really feel like he's a son to me.”
If you look at this scene, it really shows. I found myself choked up on the other side of the small screen and truly believe this is a turning point in Cooper and Tommy's relationship. They'll have to face Galino together, but I hope Tommy starts to take Cooper's intuition, smarts, and natural ability to work more seriously.
If anything, I hope they love each other more openly, just like that.
