LA28 Olympics: Women’s 100m final on day one of Games as schedule released

“It will be a great honor for the women's 100m to open the Games in Los Angeles,” said British sprinter Dina Asher-Smith.

“This is such an exciting opportunity to celebrate the enduring legacy, strength and global power of women’s sprinting, exactly 100 years since women first competed in Olympic athletics. I can’t wait to set the tone for what will be an exciting and entertaining Games.”

The opening of the Games in the women's 100m means competitors must run three heats in one day rather than two days, but LA28 chief athlete Janet Evans said they had spoken to the athletes at length and had a “mostly positive conversation”.

Track and field will be held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, with the first medal being women's triathlon and the last medal being swimming.

The swim has been moved to the second week so it can take place at the opening ceremony site, SoFi Stadium.

The first official day of the Olympic Games will also feature the largest number of women's finals in a single day.

“The LA28 Olympic Games will feature a record number of female Olympians, with every team sport featuring equal or greater numbers of women's teams compared to men's teams for the first time, and 50.5% of the total athlete quota allocated to women in 36 sports and 51 disciplines,” the organizers said., external

Details for the Olympic soccer tournament, which will take place in the United States, and the Los Angeles Paralympics, scheduled for Aug. 15-27, have yet to be announced.
