Kochetkov’s 25 saves, Ehlers’ first goal lift Hurricanes over Rangers 3-0 – Brandon Sun

NEW YORK (AP) — Petr Kochetkov made 25 saves in his season debut, Nikolaj Ehlers, Sean Walker and Seth Jarvis scored and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the New York Rangers 3-0 on Tuesday night.

Ehlers, who signed with Carolina last summer after 10 seasons in Winnipeg, scored his first goal for the Hurricanes with 6:30 left in the first period. Walker made it 2-0 with 3:53 left in the second with a long shot from the right point that eluded goalie Igor Shesterkin.

Seth Jarvis scored his team-best eighth goal into an empty net. Mike Reilly had two assists.

Kochetkov missed the start of the season due to a lower body injury. He won 27 games for Carolina last season. The 26-year-old Russian stopped Rangers captain JT Miller at point-blank range just over two minutes into the period on a power play. The shutout was the 11th of his career.

The Rangers had their three-game winning streak snapped. They lost at home, scoring just six goals in six games.

MAMON 2, SABER 1, FROM

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Clayton Keller scored 47 seconds into overtime to give Utah the win over Buffalo.

Keller drove through the Sabers' zone and drove to the net, where he missed Alex Lyon, helping the Mammoth snap a two-game losing streak.

Nick Schmaltz also scored and Karel Wejmelka made 17 saves for Utah and added an assist on the winning goal.

Noah Ostlund scored and Lyon made 33 saves for Buffalo. The Sabers have one win in their last five games, each of which went to overtime or penalty shootouts, and have points in seven straight games.

Schmalz's goal at 3:58 of the third period opened the scoring. His shot from the right circle went through Lyon for his eighth goal of the season.

Ostlund's first NHL goal tied the game at 7:50 of the third when he deflected a puck that bounced off the glass and was knocked mid-air into the net by Isak Rosen.

BRUINS 4, ISLANDERS 3, SO

NEW YORK (AP) — Marat Khusnutdinov tied the game late in the third period and scored the only goal of the shootout to help Boston beat New York for its fourth straight victory.

Viktor Arvidsson and Pavel Zaha also scored for Boston. Jeremy Swayman made 25 saves.

Bo Horvat scored twice for New York. Anthony Duclair also scored and 18-year-old defenseman Matthew Schaefer assisted. Ilya Sorokin stopped 23 shots.

Swayman denied Simon Holmstrom, Horvath and Jonathan Drouin in the shootout as the Bruins improved to 8-7-0.

Khusnutdinov tied the game at 3 with 4:54 left in the third period, converting on a rebound in front of an Islanders turnover.

Horvat scored midway through the second period, using Boston defenseman Nikita Zadorov as cover and then firing a wrist shot through the top slot over Swayman's glove.

Zacha tied the game at 2 late in the second with a power-play goal, burying the rebound after Charlie McAvoy's point shot deflected off traffic in front.

FLYERS 4, CANADIENS 3, SO

MONTREAL (AP) — Bobby Brink scored twice, Trevor Zegras won the shootout and Philadelphia beat Montreal to a three-goal lead.

Nikita Grebenkin and Cam York also scored for Philadelphia. York added an assist, Zegras had two helpers and Dan Vladar stopped 16 shots.

Kirby Dach scored twice for Montreal. Ivan Demidov had a goal and an assist, as well as Nick Suzuki. Sam Montembeault bounced back from a shaky start to make 38 saves.

The Flyers led 3–0 before the game was eight minutes old. Brink deflected a tough pass past Montembeault at 1:56, and Philadelphia scored twice more on a 5-on-3 power play.

The Canadiens scored four goals in the second game. Dach sparked the surge with a shot into the net from the end board before Demidov set up Suzuki for the power play. Dach then tied the game and Demidov gave Montreal a 4-3 lead on the power play.

Grebenkin equalized the score midway through the third half.

WILD 3, PREDATORS 2, FROM

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Marcus Johansson scored at 3:38 of overtime and Minnesota overcame a last-second tie to beat Nashville.

Predators goaltender Justus Annunen cleared the net with a hasty retreat. Johansson's first shot hit the moving net and he recovered the puck and put it over the line. After review, the goal was ruled valid, infuriating Nashville players and coaches.

Steven Stamkos tied the game for Nashville with 0.3 seconds left in regulation, and Annunen retired for the extra attacker, beating the clock and goaltender Filip Gustafsson with a one-timer from the left wing. Defenseman Nick Blankenburg kept the puck at the blue line and passed it to Stamkos for his second goal of the season and 584th overall.

Minnesota ended its six-game homestand with back-to-back wins after losing the first four. Kirill Kaprizov and Zeev Buyum scored power-play goals for the Wild, and Gustavsson made 32 saves.

Matthew Wood also scored for tired Nashville, and the Predators defeated Vancouver 5-4 in overtime at home on Monday night. Annunen stopped 22 shots in his third game of the season.

STARS 4, OIL WORKERS 3, SO

DALLAS (AP) — Wyatt Johnston had three assists before making the final shot in a shootout as Dallas beat Edmonton in their first meeting since the Oilers eliminated them in the Western Conference finals for a second straight season.

Mikko Rantanen had two goals and an assist for the Stars.

Leon Draisaitl, Connor McDavid and Vasili Podkolzin scored for Edmonton, which led 2-0 in just 7:07, playing for the third time in four days.

Casey DeSmith made 23 saves before stopping two of three shots in the shootout. Jake Ettinger was benched but did not play for Dallas after the birth of his first child.

Stuart Skinner, who beat the Stars in the last two Western finals, stopped 24 shots.

AVALANCHE 3, LIGHTNING 2

DENVER (AP) — Victor Olofsson scored twice, Scott Wedgwood made 22 saves for his NHL-best eighth win of the season and the Colorado Avalanche held off Tampa Bay in a rematch of the 2022 Stanley Cup final.

Playing against his former team, Ross Colton also scored, helping the Avalanche, who beat Tampa Bay in 2022 to win the title, increase their point total to an NHL-best 21. The Lightning have won five in a row.

Olofsson scored two goals seven days after his first career hat trick in a win over New Jersey. Nathan MacKinnon had an assist, giving him a team-high 20 points and extending his point streak to seven games.

Nikita Kucherov scored his fifth goal of the season for Tampa Bay, giving the 32-year-old right winger seven points in his last three games against the Avalanche. The goal gave him 1,005 career points, breaking a tie with Brian Propp for 100th place in NHL history.

Andrei Vasilevsky stopped 31 shots.

GOLDEN KNIGHTS 1, RED WINGS 0

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Akira Schmid made 24 saves in his second NHL regular-season game, Ivan Barbashev scored and Vegas beat Detroit.

Barbashev scored with 6:15 left in the second period, beating goalie John Gibson with a backhand shot off the rebound.

Schmid played his 55th NHL game. The Swiss goaltender's other regular-season goal came in February 2023, when New Jersey beat Philadelphia 7-0.

Detroit missed a chance to take the lead in the Eastern Conference, finishing the five-game series with a 3-2-0 record. The Red Wings will play seven of their next eight games at home.

Gibson made 33 saves. The Red Wings are without forward Patrick Kane due to an undisclosed upper body injury.

DUCKS 7, PANTHERS 3

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Cutter Gauthier scored his first career hat trick with four points as Anaheim routed Florida for its fourth straight win.

Nikita Nesterenko scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period before Jacob Trouba, Chris Kreider and Jansen Harkins added third-period goals for the upstart Ducks, who moved back into first place in the Pacific Division.

Lukas Dostal made 18 saves as the Ducks improved to 4-1-0 at home and beat the defending champions for the second time in eight days.

Brad Marchand, Evan Rodriguez and Eetu Luostarinen scored for the two-time Stanley Cup champions, who opened their four-game West Coast road trip with rough defensive play. Sergei Bobrovsky made 25 saves as Florida fell to 1-5-0 on the road.

KINGS 3, JETS 0

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Adrian Kempe scored his 200th career NHL goal, Drew Doughty broke Los Angeles' record for goals by a defenseman and the Kings beat Winnipeg.

Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves and Kevin Fiala scored a power-play goal to help the Kings earn their first home win of the season in six games.

Connor Hellebuyck made 23 saves for the Jets, who lost their first road game in five tries.

Kempe scored late in the first period to give the Kings the lead with his sixth goal of the season, attacking the crease and converting a centering pass from Joel Armia off the trapeze. Kempe became the ninth player in the 2014 draft to score 200 goals in 644 games.

Doughty passed franchise stalwart Rob Blake with his 162nd goal in 1,221 games on an empty net with 54 seconds left.
