Wake Dead: The Mystery of Drawing the Knives

In Rian Johnson's latest star-studded mystery, Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) investigates the death of a Catholic priest (Josh Brolin) and searches for answers by interrogating the dwindling congregation of a church in upstate New York. This film leans into gothic horror and takes inspiration from the works of Edgar Allan Poe.

From our review:

While some of these characters are certainly funny, as is the chatty Blanc when he finally appears on stage, there are also notes of gothic menace and even pain in the film. The desolation of the small town (and dwindling attendance at services) combined with Weeks' dark anger and the prominent mausoleum on the church grounds make this the most atmospheric of the three Knives Out films.

Carpenter's son

  • Genre: Supernatural Horror
  • Lead time: 1h 34m
  • Director: Lotfi Nathan

Nicolas Cage plays the Carpenter, who questions his faith when his adopted teenage son (Noah Jupe) begins to exhibit divine powers. Fleeing persecution, the Carpenter goes to a new settlement, where dark forces tempt the Boy and torment his family with visions of their dark future.

From our review:

This material is likely to cause controversy, and Nathan approaches it with great sensitivity—perhaps too much. The thought of a teenage boy confronted by his possible prey and tempted by mysterious forces is truly frightening, but Nathan is perhaps wary of appearing exploitative and keen to communicate his intentions, so he often retreats into vaguely foreboding cinematography. (Perhaps he believes you can't protest something you can't actually see very well.) The characters are constantly brooding—Twigs, who eventually showed real promise in the 2024 remake of The Crow, cedes her performance to Mother Mary's cape, occasionally interrupted by some gnarly horror imagery.

Chainsaw Man Movie – Reze Arca

  • Genre: Anime
  • Lead time: 1h 40m
  • Director: Tatsuya Yoshihara
  • Throw: Kikunosuke Toya, Reina Ueda, Fairuz Ai

You don't have to watch Man with a chainsaw anime to plunge into its bizarre world of devils and hunters. Chainsaw Man Movie – Reze Arca. The film follows human-chainsaw hybrid Denji who falls in love with Reze, a barista with a deadly secret. The story of teenage love is complemented by beautiful animation and pompous action.

From our review:

“Reze's Arc” is at its core a story of relationships between lovers and enemies, with our fallible protagonist Denji falling in love with Reze almost immediately upon his introduction. He is a lonely boy looking for love, which makes his heart unreliable and available on a first-come, first-served basis. As a result, despite Chainsaw Man's complex story and large cast of characters, Reze's Arc is very much its own thing. Director Tatsuya Yoshihara understands this and makes sure to keep the love story front and center rather than bogged down with background recaps for the uninitiated, especially when none of it really matters to the overall plot.

Die my love
