Former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre has left the Democratic Party over the “horrible” treatment of former President Joe Biden.
During the 2024 presidential election, Joe Biden successfully won his party's nomination, but later withdrew his candidacy after Democratic leadership insisted he withdraw due to his age and potential cognitive problems. Democrats based that on Biden's poor debate performance against Trump that summer, during which he appeared slow and confused at times. After dropping out, Biden's then-Vice President Kamala Harris secured her party's nomination despite missing a primary before losing in a landslide to President Donald Trump that November.
In an excerpt from her new memoir, Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden's treatment turned her away from the Democratic Party and she now calls herself an independent.
“Biden seemed completely at peace with his decision, but I was stunned, my emotions were blurred. I was angry and sad. I was angry and heartbroken that this man had given over 50 years of his life to serving the American people, and in the end he was treated poorly by members of his own party. It was terrible,” Jean-Pierre wrote.
The former press secretary also believed Biden would stay the course until he finally dropped out of the race.
“The Democratic Party has shaped my life, my career,” wrote Jean-Pierre. “Everything I did to make people's lives better was connected to this. The Party was the means that allowed me not only to occupy the forefront of history, working primarily on [Barack] Obama's presidential campaign while in his administration, but also to make her own history as the first black woman and openly gay person to ever serve as White House press secretary. Until now, I have never thought about leaving the party.”
Karine Jean-Pierre ultimately decided to become independent so that she could stick to her principles without showing blind loyalty to a party that she felt had betrayed her.
“Now the cloud of worry hanging over me turned into an idea of how I could do something different. How I could channel my frustration into concrete action that would allow me to fight for what I believed in without being blindly loyal to a party that I felt no longer deserved,” she wrote.
“You know what? I'm going to be an independent. I don't think I can stand being a member of the Democratic Party anymore,” she added.
