19th century coin The “King of Silver Dollars” is believed to be up for auction next week as part of Heritage's FUN US Coins Signature Auction. 1804 Adams-Carter Dollar with Draped Bust Grade III This is one of only 16 known examples of 1804 silver dollars.
The valuable silver coin is the undisputed headliner of the 38-piece Presidio collection, which will be auctioned January 14-17.
“The Presidio is an exceptional coin collection that addresses the popular theme of the 100 Greatest United States Coins and is very impressive in both the rarity and quality of the lots,” Todd Imhof, Executive Vice President, Heritage Auctions says the statement. “The 1804 Grade III Draped Bust dollar is one of the most famous trophies in all of U.S. numismatics and a coin that will immediately become the centerpiece of a new collection. Only the most accomplished numismatists in history have owned the 1804 dollar, and the Grade III Adams-Carter coin has been the coin of choice for the most distinguished of them throughout history.”
Prominent collectors, including Phineas Adams, Amon J. Carter, Sr., Waldo Charles Newcomer, and Edward Howland Robinson Green, owned this coin at various times. In 1941, a numismatist B. Max Mehl said, “[i]In all the numismatics of the whole world… there has never been a single coin that has been and is the subject of so much romance, interest, [and] comment,” in relation to this particular coin. It is expected to sell for more than $1 million.

Besides the King of Silver Dollars, the third largest 1854-S Quarter Liberty Eaglewill also be auctioned. One of only 13 known examples, the Liberty Quarter Eagle 1854-S was created during height of the California Gold Rush and in the early days of the San Francisco Mint. Of the 246 Liberty Quarter Eagles produced in 1854, most have disappeared over time.
