LONDON — LONDON (AP) — King Charles III chose Westminster Abbey as the site of his Christmas speech on Thursday, reflecting the idea of pilgrimage expected to be the theme of the annual address to the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.
London's central landmark, famous for the lavish coronations and royal weddings that have been held here for over 1,000 years, is also the center of an annual pilgrimage to the tomb of Edward the Confessor, which lies at the heart of the church. Edward, a monk-like monarch, was canonized as a saint in 1161.
Monarch Yearbook holiday message it is watched by millions of people in Britain and across the Commonwealth, a voluntary grouping of 56 independent countries, most of which have historical ties to Britain. The pre-recorded speech is broadcast at 3pm (1500 GMT), when many families are enjoying a traditional Christmas lunch.
The speech is one of the rare occasions when Charles, 77, can express his own views and does not seek government advice. It usually has a strong religious basis, reflects current issues and sometimes draws on the monarch's personal experiences.
This year's address will take place just two weeks after Charles made a very personal appearance on television. in which he said “good news” from doctors meant he could cut back on his cancer treatment in the new year.
The king was diagnosed with immobility undiagnosed form of cancer at the beginning of 2024. Buckingham Palace said his treatment is now entering a “precautionary phase” and his condition will be monitored to ensure his continued recovery.
Charles recorded last year's speech at Fitzrovia Chapel, which was once part of the now demolished Middlesex Hospital. During this speech, he paid tribute to healthcare workers across the country and expressed special gratitude to the doctors and nurses who supported him after his cancer diagnosis.
This year's Christmas speech will be Charles's fourth since ascending to the throne after his mother. Queen Elizabeth IIdied September 2022.
