Kelowna handyman chases down attempted package thief

A Rutland A neighborhood in Kelowna, British Columbia, was the scene of a surprise chase this week after a handyman working nearby was confronted by a suspected package thief, and it was all caught on video.

The incident happened on Tuesday, shortly after the van dropped off a package at a home and drove off. Pavel Parviz, general contractor for Woodex Construction, says he noticed a man following the driver.

“The van just stopped, dropped off some packages, just pulled out and the guy followed,” Parviz said.

“It was kind of funny because it was right after Christmas,” he said. “The first thought that came to my mind was that he looks like the Grinch, to be honest.”

The video shows the suspect grabbing the bag and trying to leave. Parviz says he ran into this man.

“He said it was his package. I said, 'No, it's not yours,'” Parviz explained. “I tried to take the package from him. He started fighting, so I finally managed to get the package and kind of push him away.”

But the meeting did not end there.

Parviz says the man was able to regain control of the package and tried to escape a second time. Then Parviz chased him and held him near the road.

“I ran here, ran after him, held him there in the road and took the package away from him again,” he said.

The footage shows Parviz leaving with the recovered package, but moments later the suspect can be heard screaming and throwing rocks before leaving the area. At one point, a voice is heard shouting, “You’re going to be shot.”

“He came out and started shouting at me: ‘I’ll kill you,’ or something like that,” Parviz recalled.

Ironically, Parviz says he was in the neighborhood consulting with another resident about installing a secure storage box system designed to prevent package thefts.

“It’s like an anti-theft box, I make it myself,” he said.

Parviz, a former border patrol agent in Uzbekistan, said he was unfazed by the confrontation.

When asked if the incident scared him, he laughed it off.

“No, I think not,” he said.
