Kate Winslet talks about the challenges she faced during her directorial debut.”Goodbye June“
Written by her son Joe Anders, the actress revealed that she only planned to star in and produce the film. When she was also offered the opportunity to direct the film, Winslet said her initial thought was that she “wouldn't be able to do three jobs.”
“I know I'm good at multitasking, but it's just too many things,” Winslet said. Digital Spy. “I was desperate to change myself [and] I had a really good list of a few people who would be absolutely brilliant in the role.”
She continued, “But at that moment… well, first of all, Netflix was like, 'Uh-huh,' and second of all, I cast all these incredible actors. How could I not go and act with them? Because that's what we do. We act, we pretend, and it's an amazing thing.”
“Goodbye June,” now playing in select theaters, follows four adult siblings and their father as they navigate family dynamics while their ailing mother's health deteriorates. Winslet plays Julia, one of June's children, and Helen Mirren plays June, the family matriarch.
“I know it sounds a little morbid, but we had to really become a family to make it feel as real and intimate as possible,” Winslet added. “You can't just show up, get the job done and go home again; it becomes something else. We're lucky in this movie that that actually happened.”
In addition to Winslet and Mirren, Goodbye June stars Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough and Timothy Spall. Additional cast members include Stephen Merchant, Fisayo Akinade, Jeremy Swift and Raza Jaffrey.
Following its theatrical release, the film will premiere on Netflix on December 24th.
