On October 15, people around the world use Wave of Light candles to honor the memory of infants who have died. This is the second year the Prince and Princess of Wales have contributed to the effort, and in 2024, Kate Middleton wrote a heartfelt message along with a photo of her candle. “Baby Loss Awareness Week is a very important time to support those who have experienced the devastation of losing a child,” she wrote. “Sending love, strength and hope to everyone who has suffered. #WaveofLight.” The note was signed with the letter “C”, which meant that it was written by Katherine herself.
A collaboration between Plum & Ashby, Tommy's and author Elle Wright, the candles were created specifically for the Wave of Light project. The candle comes complete with a “memory card” allowing the owner to write down and reflect on “precious names, dates or words of love” while paying tribute.
In 2022, both Kate Middleton and Prince William took to their official social media accounts to share a message of support and a list of resources for those affected by the tragedy of child loss.
“This Baby Loss Awareness Week, I take a moment to think about all those who have been impacted by pregnancy and baby loss,” the couple wrote on the page their instagram stories, before directing followers to support services such as Child Bereavement UK, Maternal Mental Health Alliance, Sands Charity and Tommy's.
“Please contact us if you feel this could help you or someone you know,” they wrote.
