AMSTERDAM – Jose Mourinho claimed his first Champions League win with his new club Benfica and Samuel Dahl's early goal set the stage for a 2-0 win over troubled Ajax.
It was 36th to 35th in the standings when the two winless teams met in the Netherlands.
Left-back Dahl scored an unstoppable volley on the rebound after Ajax goalkeeper Vitezslav Jaros saved a header from experienced Benfica defender Nicolas Otamendi. Leandro Barreiro scored the second goal in the 90th.
Ajax have lost all five of their Champions League games and won just one of their last 10 games in all competitions.
In another early game, Canadian forward Promise David scored the only goal as Belgium's Union Saint-Gilloise won 1-0 over injury-depleted Galatasaray.
The Turkish club were without Champions League top scorer Victor Osimhen injured and finished with 10 men after 18-year-old defender Arda Unyay received two yellow cards.
Later on Tuesday, Pep Guardiola will celebrate his 100th Champions League game as manager when Manchester City take on Bayer Leverkusen. Chelsea play Barcelona and Juventus head to the Arctic Circle to face Bodo/Glimt, where temperatures are forecast to be just above freezing.
Also Borussia Dortmund-Villarreal, Marseille-Newcastle United, Napoli-Qarabag and Slavia Prague-Athletic Bilbao.
