Jordan Shipley is in critical condition after accident on his ranch

Two-time All-American wide receiver and acclaimed host of the Outdoors Channel. Jordan Shipley is in critical condition after an accident at his ranch in Texas, his family said in the statement.

Shipley, 40, was listed in stable condition after remaining hospitalized Tuesday night in Austin. The statement said the car he was operating near his hometown of Burnet caught fire. The former Texan great suffered “severe burns to his body.”

Shipley retired abruptly in 2012 after three seasons in the NFL, mainly due to persistent concussions and chronic knee problems. He quickly moved on to television shows that showcased his passion for deer hunting and became one of the hosts of “Bucks Tecomate” and Tecomate Whitetail Nation.

“It wasn't hard at all,” Shipley said before retiring at 27. “Only because I never saw myself as a footballer first and foremost. Don't get me wrong, I worked as hard as I could at football and I loved it, but I never really saw it as my whole personality because I had so much experience playing outdoors. Really, having that opportunity, I was really excited to move forward.”

Although he had a successful rookie season with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2010, with 52 receptions for 600 yards and three touchdowns, he is best remembered as a player record-setting player in Texas.

Shipley played receiver and returner from 2006 to 2009, setting program single-season records in 2009 with 116 receptions and 1,489 yards. He also remains the career leader in receptions with 248 and ranks second in career receiving yards with 3,191 behind Roy Williams. Shipley also returned four punts or kickoffs for touchdowns.

After being drafted in the third round by the Bengals, he became one of the most popular players among Cincinnati fans, with his No. 11 jersey worn by thousands. After suffering a debilitating knee injury early in the 2011 season, he was never the same player and played briefly for Tampa Bay and Jacksonville before retiring.

According to his family, Jordan was driving the car on his ranch when it caught fire. He managed to free himself from the car, but “not before suffering severe burns on his body.” Jordan was airlifted to a hospital in Austin.

“He was able to reach one of his ranch hands, who took him to a local hospital. He was then airlifted to Austin, where he remains in critical but stable condition,” the statement said.

Shipley's younger brother, former Texas wide receiver Jackson Shipley, 33, asked for prayers statement on Instagram: “Please pray for complete healing and no infections or other problems on his road to recovery. I don't want to go into all the details other than that his life was spared today by the grace of God and the pure will to live. I believe prayer is effective, so I ask anyone and everyone to keep Jordan in prayer.”
