After the game, Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson found nothing wrong with Binnington's goal.

“I don't know, maybe he was trying to grab it to give it to him,” Thompson told reporters in Washington.

Ovechkin's record

Ovechkin became the NHL's all-time leading scorer last season when he scored his 895th career goal in April, passing Wayne Gretzky.

He entered the 2025–26 season needing three goals to reach the 900-goal mark and scored his first goal of the season on October 17 against the Minnesota Wild. A week later, he scored No. 899 against the Columbus Blue Jackets and buried No. 900 on Wednesday night.

“A couple of days ago someone asked me, 'Are you thinking about (900)?' Of course, this is a huge number, no one has ever done this in the history of the NHL, and to be the first player to ever do this is a special moment,” Ovechkin said. “It's nice that it's over and the fans and my family can be here. It's very cool.”

Ovechkin, who turned 40 in September, has one year remaining on his contract with the Capitals but has not talked about retiring.
