“Jonathan Marchessault could have joined the Canadiens if the club had wanted him to.”

About 18 months ago, the Canadiens and Jonathan Marchessault discussed the possibility of him coming to town.

As everyone knows, it didn’t work out. The Quebecers followed Steven Stamkos and Brady Skay to Nashville to play for a club that was then on the rise.

Things change quickly, don't they?

All this to say, at this point his $5.5 million per year contract with the Quebecers until 2029 appears to be the reason the Preds can't easily trade him.

Of course, that doesn't mean he'll never be traded. But his poor start to the season complicates matters.

In this regard, it is worth mentioning that Renaud Lavoie, who is well connected in the hockey world, touched on the topic of Jonathan Marchessault yesterday in his column with Jean-Charles Lajoie.

What should he have said? The Canadiens could get the Quebec forward if they wanted. But with more than three years left at $5.5 million per year and the Preds have no intention of giving up salary, it's no good.

Let's not forget that Quebecers control his destiny and that he spoke with the Canadiens last summer. Reading between the lines, we understand that playing in Montreal will not necessarily be a ban for the player.

Especially if it gets him out of Nashville?

It's logical to assume that without salary garnishment, Hughes would have said no. After all, he didn't want to give the player a long contract to avoid case with his bad years at the end of his contract.

Why would he go after it at full price now when it's not rolling?

If Steven Stamkos agrees to stay in Nashville this season, perhaps the Preds, as the market develops (and the sellers decide to do their job), decide to hold on to the money on Marchessault's contract.

When that happens, we'll see what the Hubs decide to do… even if Quebec is not the center.
