Johnson decries Dems after government reopens: ‘We didn’t give them anything’

Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson accused top Democrats of taking priority in their jobs over hungry Americans after the House voted to reopen the government on Wednesday Fox News.

House of Representatives voted to end the 43-day government shutdown by a vote of 222-209 on Wednesday night just after 8:00 pm ET.

“WITHHack Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries from New York. They needed political cover because the Marxists are taking over the Democratic Party, especially in their state,” Johnson said.Hannity

“They were more afraid of political retribution from the radicals who now control the Democratic Party than they were afraid of taking food out of the mouths of hungry families,” he added.

“The long national nightmare is finally over,” the speaker said. “Tonight, Republicans finally crushed the Democratic shutdown. We all performed together. We did exactly what we told the American people to do.”

The bill heads to President Donald Trump's desk. Johnson said he would present it to the commander in chief for signature.

The financial standoff that has gripped Washington for weeks has centered in part on Democrats' refusal to support a funding bill without renewing Obamacare subsidies.

“It was a selfish political stunt,” Johnson said. “It has brought nothing but pain to the American people, and I think it will be a long time before they forget it.”

The bill passed by the House of Representatives funds the government only until Jan. 30. It would also reverse October federal layoffs implemented by the Trump administration.

Johnson said none of the Democrats' “radical” demands were met in the legislation.

“We didn't give them anything – no radical, crazy demands,” Johnson added. “I think good has won today and it was long overdue.”

He said Trump was “going out of his way to support Americans hurt by the shutdown” and expressed confidence that the administration would continue those efforts.

“You’ll see the same level of fervor,” Johnson said. “The entire cabinet, the entire administration will work around the clock to restore the functioning of the government as quickly as possible.”
