Jobs minister urges Canada Post to send new offer to striking union

The Minister of Work Places Patti Hademe urged Canada to quickly put a new offer to the Union of Amazing Postal Workers on Monday.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) entered the picket lines on Thursday after Ottawa announced broad changes in Crown Corporation to solve the problem of its problematic financial situation.

These changes include the termination of the Daily Mail delivery, the closure of some rural post offices and the movement of almost all Canadian households to the community mailboxes – it moves that the trade union calls a direct attack on employees.

In an interview with the Canadian press, on Monday, Hadem did not rule out federal intervention to put an end to the last blow. But she also said that the Canada Post should quickly place a new offer on the table, and the trade union should seriously consider any proposal.

She said that the responsibility for the parties was gathering together after almost two years of negotiations to outline a new course to fight the postal service.

“This union and the corporation must find out the future of its labor force together and how they are going to, together to transform Canada, become a viable, stable Crown corporation,” Hadjem said.

“There is no time here to spend here either a corporation or in the trade union as soon as this proposal is submitted.”

Companies roll from the 2nd Canadian postal strike

The second strike in Canada post in less than a year has already begun to affect enterprises that rely on maintenance, since both sides are digging, and Ottawa signals about the proposed reductions that caused a blow – this is only the beginning.

Canada Post was preparing to place a new offer on the table on Friday, but was reviewing this proposal after the announcement of the federal government.

The representative of Post Canada Jon Hamilton said last week that there is still a “significant gap” between the Canada Post and the trade union. He said that the new proposal will reflect changes in the federal government and a wide directive for obtaining the postal service on a strong basis and reduction of burden for taxpayers.

The financial situation of Canada Post is terrible, and the company claims that during the summer it lost more than $ 10 million a day, as the labor uncertainty came. The postal service relied on federal support to maintain light in recent years.

In this year, in the report of the Industrial Investigation Commission, it was shown that Crown Corporation was effectively insolvent, and offered many measures to save it afloat – proposals, the proposals of the federal government, adopted wholesale in their announcement last week.

CuPW negotiator Jim Gallant said last week that the trade union understands the financial problems of Canada, but the solutions that the federal government propose “extreme”.

He said that the trade union wants the strike throughout the country to push the federal government to return to the overhaul of Canada post and conducted a state review of the mandate.

The Canadian Federation of Independent Business warned that the strike would have a “huge impact” on small enterprises that rely on Canada, but the organization encouraged Ottawa to promote the planned reforms.
