LOS ANGELES (AP) — Forget letters to Santa. If you're one of JJ Redick's kids, you'll have to work a little harder to get your Christmas gifts.
The Los Angeles Lakers coach and his wife Chelsea told sons Kai and Knox they would have to write a “persuasive essay” explaining why they should receive their greatest gift wish.
“I thought my 9-year-old really knocked it out of the park,” Redick said before the Lakers hosted the Houston Rockets on Christmas night. “A couple of his friends have one of these Meta VR headsets, so he wanted one.”
The young man received a headset that offers games and entertainment in high-definition virtual reality.
Knox, who is 11 years old, received an Apple watch.
“We know we need to start keeping an eye on him,” Redick said. “Obviously he doesn't have a cell phone, but now he has a cell number and it's a big step for him. I thought it was the coolest thing. We went for a walk with the dog this morning and he called all his friends.”
The device also allows tracking, and Redick added, “Location services are enabled.”
The Redicks lost their home in a deadly wildfire in Pacific Palisades last January. The boys, basketball fanatics, were soon after given signed game-worn jerseys from Victor Wembanyama and Chris Paul to replace some of their extensive memorabilia collection that had been destroyed.
