New York Jets Cornerback Kris Boyd remains in critical but stable condition a day after being shot in the stomach in midtown Manhattan.
The New York Police Department has released surveillance images of a suspect wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred at approximately 2:06 a.m. Sunday in front of 156 West 38 St. in the south Midtown area.
“The person being sought is described as a man of average build,” the NYPD said in a statement emailed to The Times. “He was last seen wearing a black cap, black sweatshirt, black pants, multi-colored trainers and carrying a black book bag.”
According to the NYPD, the suspect fled on foot, heading east on West 38th Street. Emergency medical services responded to the incident, police said, and transported a 29-year-old male victim to NYC Health and Hospitals/Bellevue in critical but stable condition.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams' office was among the first to identify Boyd as the victim.
“My prayers are with New York Jets Kris Boyd and his loved ones,” Adams wrote on social media Sunday. “Even as our city's shooting rate has reached historic lows, we must continue to work to end gun violence. Too many young lives have been tragically changed and cut short by this epidemic.”
The Jets, who said goodbye to the NFL schedule this week, said in a statement Sunday: “We are aware of the situation with Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time.”
Boyd was selected by the Minnesota Vikings in the seventh round of the 2019 draft and also played for the Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans. Known primarily as a special teams player, Boyd signed a one-year, $1.6 million contract with the Jets last offseason but was placed on the season-ending injured reserve list on Aug. 18 due to a shoulder injury.
On Sunday, Jets linebacker Jermaine Johnson and cornerback Harrison Phillips took to social media to pray for their teammate.
“Everyone please pray for my brother and teammate Kris Boyd and his family!!!” Johnson wrote. “Lord, please extend your healing hand over Chris and bring him back to health and safety. Lord, I ask you to please help him get through this safely.”
Phillips wrote: “Father God, we come to you right now asking for your healing power over KB. You are the God of miracles. Lord, lay your mighty hand on him as he fights the Lord God. Guide every doctor, nurse and surgeon that touches him, master. Give strength to his family! Chris is a fighter and we are all here for him.”
