James Madison fans throw snowballs, nearly hit Troy player during game

A college football conference On Friday, the championship turned into a snowball fight, as a result of which at one point a player was almost hit, which could have affected the game.

For James Madison In Friday's Sun Belt Conference championship game against Troy, James Madison athletic director Matt Roane was forced to send a PA message to home fans, warning them to stop throwing snowballs onto the field or risk a penalty for JMU.

Roane's warning came shortly after Troy's Evan Crenshaw was nearly hit by a snowball as he took a punt from the end zone with the JMU student section following him. Crenshaw returned a 26-yard punt to set up the Dukes' first score, a 40-yard field goal.

Fans in the student section began throwing snowballs during pregame warmups when the Duke marching band was abandoned. They continued in this manner for most of the first half, despite repeated warnings over the public address system.

Harrisonburg received approx. 1 1/2 inches of snow Friday saw the first measurable snowfall of the season.

No. 19 JMU has a chance to make the College Football Playoff with a win over Troy and a loss No. 16 Virginia at Duke in Saturday's Atlantic Coast Conference championship game.
