James Gunn has already made a splash as co-CEO of DC Studios and as director of its first hit, last summer's Superman (our pick for film of the year). But according to the man himself, he almost didn't take the job – and he's not so sure that being both a key director and a studio head can last forever.
“I don't think it was ever done. Even Walt Disney was more of a producer than a director. This is an experiment. And yes, sometimes it probably sounds crazy, especially since I don't make the most traditional films,” says Gunn. Diversity. “But I love big spectacles. This is my weakness. I initially turned down this job. I didn't want to do what Kevin Feige does. But one day [co-CEO Peter Safran] and I realized that we would do this together, it became exciting. I still don't know if this will be sustainable in the long term. That's a lot. There just aren’t enough hours in the day.”
