At the time of writing Avatar: Fire and Ash earned over half a billion worldwide (via Numbers). We don't want to announce it too early, but we expect it to make a few more pennies as well. However, even with its wild success, one man who is cool about Pandora's future is himself the creator of the world. James Cameron.
For years, the Oscar-winning director's blue franchise plans have always been to bring at least five chapters to the screen, with hints as early as 2022. Chapter 5, apparently bringing the Na'vi to Earth. However, if the threequel doesn't achieve the success of its predecessors, James Cameron has a backup plan to reveal the future of Avatar if we never see it.
Well, that would certainly be an interesting way to wrap things up. The truth is that, given how much lore the director has already created, the proposed press conference may be a long one. Luckily, as an alternative, Cameron has stated that he would be happy to expand the Avatar story into books if the films don't continue.
“There's so much culture and backstory and side details that have been developed into these characters. I'd love to do something at that level of detail.” But it could be risky, and he added: “There's no business model for it anymore. People don't read.” While this is still up for debate, James Cameron's page-turner feels it's definitely worth a read.
