Jaguars get Greg Newsome, ship Tyson Campbell to Browns

JACKSONVILLE, FL – Jaguars And Browns the defenders swapped places Tyson Campbell And Greg Newsomealong with draft picks, in Wednesday night's trade.

The Jaguars sent Campbell and the 2026 seventh-round draft pick they previously acquired from Eagles The Browns for Newsome and the 2026 sixth-round pick they received from Jets.

The Browns selected Newsome, 25, with the 26th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He has a fifth-year option in 2025 that will pay him $13.38 million and is set to become a free agent after the season.

Newsome spent his rookie season at cornerback but moved to nickel after Cleveland selected him in the draft. Martin Emerson Jr.. in 2022. Newsome struggled last season, but Emerson's season-ending Achilles injury in training camp opened the door for him to return to the streets, where he expressed more comfort.

In five games this season, Newsome has 23 tackles and five pass breakups.

The Jaguars selected Campbell with the 33rd overall pick in 2021. He signed a four-year contract extension worth $76.5 million with $53.4 million guaranteed just before the start of 2024 training camp. He had six pass breakups and a forced fumble this season and 34 tackles in five games.

Campbell, 25, had his best season in 2022 when he intercepted three passes, forced one fumble, recovered two others and broke up 15 passes to help the Jaguars win the AFC South.

He was limited to 11 games by a hamstring injury in 2023, when he had just one interception and five pass breakups. He missed five games with a hamstring injury and later dealt with shoulder and hip injuries in 2024 when he broke up six passes and made 59 tackles but no interceptions.

The deal comes as the Jaguars are in preliminary talks with teams around the league about needs ahead of the Nov. 4 trade deadline. The Browns had already held preliminary talks with Newsome about a contract extension, and the Jaguars saw an opportunity to add a player they felt would better fit into defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile's scheme.

“We felt like Greg's skill set and the way we changed the defensive scheme to play with more vision at the quarterback to fit well with the way we operate and his ability to find the football was a trait he had,” general manager James Gladstone said Thursday morning.

Giving up Campbell's future contract was also a plus, and the two sides agreed to a deal late Wednesday. The Jaguars have already paid Campbell a $12.4 million option bonus this season and will not assume any future debt to Campbell.

The Jaguars have not discussed a contract extension with Newsome or his agent, but stressed that the deal is not a lease.

“[An extension] not beyond the realm of possibility, but not part of the active equation [of the trade]”,” Gladstone said. Gladstone also said this may not be the last trade the team makes between now and the trade deadline to win the AFC South. “We're trying to win football games, and part of that trade is that we think Greg Newsome will help us do that,” he said. “We'll be aggressive to make us the best team in this year.”

This is the second Jaguars-Brown trade in six months. Jacksonville sent four draft picks to Cleveland on Day 1 of the NFL Draft in April to move up three spots to the No. 2 wide receiver/cornerback selection. Travis Hunter.

Cleveland was also busy acquiring a left tackle last week. Cam Robinson from Houston Texans and sending a defender Joe Flacco To Cincinnati Bengals.
