I know, I know, change is hard, isn't it? The other day I was upset that YouTube changed the videos so that they had rounded corners instead of perfectly rectangular ones. This is blasphemous! This is a feeling I will continue to have until I eventually forget about it because life moves on to the next offense. However, minor changes like these can often set off some sort of internal alarm, as you may have experienced on the store pages on Steam looks a little… wider.
This is because they are actually wider! Valve this was already mentioned somewhere along the way, and yesterday the update appeared on the digital storefront with a nifty little blog post explaining and showing what the changes actually are. Essentially, the store pages for games and those few parts that aren't games have been expanded from 940px to 1200px. It doesn't sound like much, but when you look at them side by side, you can see a surprising amount of added space.
However, this is not the only difference. Images displayed in the carousel are now higher resolution, and there are several new viewing modes; Theater mode puts images and videos on more of the screen, and full-screen mode is exactly what it sounds like. Developers will also have more control over the About sections of their games, again thanks to larger, higher-quality images and more flexible formatting. You may also notice that the background images of the store pages look a little larger as there is more color and texture.
This Steam extension touches other aspects of the store, such as search results and recommendations pages, with some general adjustments to the sizes of individual tags, charts, and the news center. Apparently, the home page will be expanded in the “near future.” Plus, you don't have to worry about pages being too wide if you're using a narrow browser or client, because Valve even tested it on some old iPod a team member had lying around. Classic valve.
