- Amazon Still Listing Outdated Storage Devices in Hot New Products Categories
- Floppy disks, Zips and tapes remain online decades after they've become obsolete
- Removing them will make them easier to view and less confusing for today's technology buyers.
Like many people who have been in tech for a long time, I have accumulated a lot of products over the years. I'm not very good at throwing things away – you never know when you'll need them!
As a result, I also have a large collection of cables dating back decades. I would go through and throw out the really old ones, but a lot of them are bound, so that's a project for another time.
I also have boxes—big boxes, not shoe boxes—of hardware that went out of use years ago.
1990s called
This hardware includes video cards, other expansion cards, external small storage devices, external Zip drives, and at least three floppy drives and five optical drives.
I will never need them and one day I will throw them away. I'll probably get rid of all those old CDs, DVDs and floppy disks at the same time.
The reason I mention this is because Amazon seems a little like me and still does too many ancient storage products in their warehouses. Run a search and you will see.
Even worse, under the Amazon Hot New Products banner, the retail giant has sections for Tape Libraries, External ZIP drivesAnd Floppy and tape drives.
As you might expect, there aren't a lot of interesting and hot new products in these categories, but that doesn't mean there aren't any.
If you have a few floppy disks and are dying to know what's on them, Amazon has you covered with a new external USB floppy drive and a new floppy drive emulator.
The “best-selling new and upcoming releases” in these three categories are described as being “frequently updated,” so if you're looking for a new external Zip drive, be sure to check back with us often.
It's hard to imagine anyone actually buying a new floppy disk or Zip drive in 2025, and by keeping these categories, Amazon risks confusing shoppers who might think these are current products rather than relics.
Stopping them will tidy up the store and make the Hot New Items page less ironic.
