If you are in the USA, Bradley Cooper's new movie Is this thing on? hits theaters today (December 19). This is his third film as a director after A star is born And Maestro – but his first film with real inspiration.
Those of us who are fans of international comedy in the UK probably already knew about this. The story is loosely based on the life of Liverpudlian comedian John Bishop, who began performing stand-up after splitting from his wife.
“No, not really. I'm sure it would make a great movie… it would make a different movie,” Chappell tells me when I ask about a potential John Bishop biopic. “Will was always going to be in it and there was never any doubt that he would try to play John Bishop.
“Oddly enough, I regret it. I would have liked to see how it turned out, but creatively it was probably the right decision.”
But why John at all? “It’s such a sweet story,” Arnett adds. “I met John by chance through a mutual friend on a barge in Amsterdam. This is a true story! So when he told me how he got into stand-up and what he's done in his life, it sounded like a great story to tell.
“Mark and I started writing and then reached out to Bradley. When I sent him the script, he said he wanted to direct it and came to work on it with us. “Bradley has taken us in such an incredible new direction.”
Unfortunately, fans in the UK and Australia will have to wait until January 30, 2026 to see how the trio take Bishop's song, but it will be worth the wait.
Honestly, it's that time of year when we need something uplifting and I'm still thinking about it. Is this thing on? more than two months after viewing.
