Investigators deployed to scene following a train derailment near Cranbrook, B.C.

An investigation is ongoing after several cars on a Canadian Pacific Kansas City train derailed about 10 miles east of Cranbrook, British Columbia.

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada says a team of investigators was sent to the scene.

CPKC said in a statement that the crash occurred around 7 a.m. in a remote area of ​​the Eastern Kootenay Regional District in southern British Columbia and there were no injuries.

According to the railroad company, a preliminary assessment indicates that approximately 12 vehicles were involved in the incident, including several railroad cars carrying timber and tank cars carrying propane.

CPKC says its crews and equipment are on site to conduct a full assessment and begin cleanup efforts.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

The East Kootenay Regional District says it is aware of a train crash on the Kootenay River near Fenwick Road, which is now closed to the public.

The regional district says it is asking people to avoid the area as officers work with agencies to support the railroad company in their response.
