Indonesian rescuers search for missing students after school collapse kills 37 – Winnipeg Free Press

Sidoarjo, Indonesia (AP) – Indonesian rescuers on Sunday are looking for those who disappeared after the prayer hall in the Islamic boarding school collapsed almost a week ago. They found 23 bodies over the weekend on weekends, bringing the number of those killed to 37.

Using Jackhammers, round saws, and sometimes their naked hands, rescue teams diligently removed the wreckage in an attempt to find 26 missing students.

The structure fell to the top of hundreds of students, mainly boys aged 12 to 19 years old, on September 30, at the centuries of al-Khozini in Sido-Arjo on the eastern side of the island of Java Indonesia. According to the authorities, only one student escaped unharmed, while 95 received treatment from various injuries and released. Eight others received serious wounds and remained hospitalized on Sunday.

The police said that two levels were added to a two -story building without permission, which led to the construction of a structural failure. This caused a wide anger from illegal construction in Indonesia.

“The construction could not support the load, while the concrete poured (for construction) of the third floor, because it did not meet the standards, and the whole 800 square meters (8,600 square feet) collapsed,” said Maji Irmavan, construction expert from the tenth November Technological Institute.

Irmavan also said that students should not have been allowed inside the building under construction.

The head of the Sidoardo district, Subandi, confirmed that the police announced that the school management did not apply for the necessary permission before the start of construction.

“Many buildings, including the traditional expansion of boarding schools, were built in the Nerbanous areas without permission,” said Subandi, which bears one name on Sunday.

The 2002 Indonesian Construction Code states that permits should be issued by the relevant authorities to what kind of construction, or in the case of a fine and imprisonment. If the violation causes death, this can lead to a imprisonment of up to 15 years and a fine of up to 8 billion rupees (almost $ 500,000).

School caretaker – Abdus Salam Mujib, dear Islamic clergyman in East Java. He proposed a public apology in a rare speech a day after the incident.

“This is really the will of God, so we all must be patient, and let God replace it with kindness, with something much better. We must be sure that God will reward those who touched this incident with large awards, ”he said.

Criminal investigations with the participation of Muslim clergymen remain sensitive in the most densely populated nation of the Muslim majority in the world.

Since the collapse, there have been no comments on the part of school officials.

“We will carefully investigate this matter,” said the head of the police, Yast -Yava Nanang Ainto on Sunday. “Our investigation also requires leadership from a team of construction experts in order to determine whether the negligence from the school has led to death.”
