Indiana's public colleges and universities will soon have to prove to the state that new degree programs demonstrate a commitment to upholding American values before implementing them.
The Indiana Higher Education Commission is implementing a new program proposal process that requires schools to prove that a course's curriculum develops “civic responsibility” and promotes a “commitment to the core values of American society” in order to win the commission's approval. according to to Indiana public media. Schools in the state have already been cut almost 20% programs due to low enrollment and completion rates, removing courses such as Purdue University Fort Wayne's Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies. Indiana Republican Gov. Mike Brown accepted basic steps keep higher education institutions in check by convincing all 15 of the state's public colleges and universities to keep tuition the same after they asked the commission to recommend a 0% price increase. The commission's latest move appears to be inspired by Brown's plan for higher education.

Specifically, the state now prohibits any “training, instruction, procedure, or program” that promotes “preferential treatment of one individual's particular race, color, ethnicity, or national origin over another.”
