India loses 19th consecutive toss as South Africa elects to field in 1st ODI – Winnipeg Free Press

RANCHI, India (AP) — South Africa won the toss and was selected to play in the first one-day international cricket match against India on Sunday.

India, who have lost their 19th consecutive overs, will be led by Lokesh Rahul in the absence of the injured Shubman Gill and will also include white-ball stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

South Africa stand-in captain Aiden Markram said he expected dew to fall later in the night, prompting him to field first after winning the toss.

The Proteas rested regular captain Temba Bavuma and left-arm spinner Keshav Mahraj for the first game of the three-match series after both played in South Africa's 2-0 Test series win against India.

Prenelan Subrien is the only specialist spinner in the playing XI as the visitors opt to use four seamers to challenge the strong Indian fielding line-up.

Rahul said he would have bowled too if he had won the toss after seeing dew on the field during evening practice.

India have decided to select three spinners – Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep Yadav – with Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana as the three fast bowlers.
