Imagine a second, alternative version of our world. Everything is the same on the surface. The sky is blue, the economy is in shambles; this is an unnatural order of things. And yet you can't help but feel that something has changed. As if something was missing or perhaps replaced. Ah, here it is – Kill Spire 2 it's not a game that even remotely exists. It turns out that this world, our world, where bagel called Kill Spire 2 exists, or rather will exist, it is just a world in which we exist thanks to the toss of a coin.
This, I want to be clear, is not a joke. “We were working on a bunch of tiny projects, little prototypes, and we were having fun, but we said, 'Okay, let's get back together,'” explained Mega Crit co-founder Anthony Giovannetti. PC gamer in a recent interview. Apparently it was during Covid, and Giovannetti and Casey Yano were looking for their next worthy project.
According to Giovannetti, a sequel to Slay the Spire was not their only idea. “We had different avenues we could work on,” he explained. “One was a completely different project and the other was a sequel. I thought the sequel would present some interesting design challenges. In the end, we tossed a coin and Slay the Spire 2 won. So we started working on it and the rest is history.”
Giovannetti himself didn't witness the coin toss, it was Yano who did it via a Discord call, which the former notes “might be shady” but he still believes he was told “the true result. I think Casey would have pretty much preferred the coin to go the other way because I've always been a card guy and he's been an action guy.”
There is nothing more satisfying to me than seeing the creator of a thing engage in an exercise that is directly related to what he creates. In this case, it's Mega Crit playing this fickle game called randomness, hoping that everything will work out and that they, if they're lucky, will kill the spire. But maybe don't do it unless you're literally the same people who made Slay the Spire, this isn't the time in history to take unnecessary risks.
Slay the Spire 2 is currently scheduled to be released on “secret thursday” in March 2026, where you can play it in Early Access. You can add it to your wishlist on Steam. Here.
