Ilhan Omar Reveals Her Son Was Targeted by ICE

Congressman Ilhan Omar's son has become embroiled in the Trump administration's immigration crackdown in Minnesota.

In an interview with a local TV channel VKKO Omar said Sunday that federal agents detained her son on Saturday and demanded proof of citizenship.

“Yesterday, after he stopped at Target, he was stopped by [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] agents, and as soon as he was able to show his passport, they let him go,” Omar said, adding that her son always carries his passport with him.

After ICE visited the mosque, she said she “had to remind him how concerned I am because all these areas that they're talking about are areas where he could end up, and they're doing racial profiling, they're looking for young people who look like Somalis who they think are undocumented.”

Earlier this month, President Trump launched the program immigration crackdown targets the local Somali-American community in the Minneapolis-St. Pola metro area, the largest in the country. The President said he “doesn't want them in our country” by calling Lobster and the rest of the community garbage.

On Friday Omar sent letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and acting ICE Director Todd Lyons, accusing the government of “egregious racial profiling” and “egregious levels of unnecessary force” in Minnesota.

“It is clear to me that this surge was a direct response to Trump’s racist comments about Somalis and me in particular,” Omar wrote.
