I spend most of the day at my desk. Ever since I got my computer science degree 22 years ago, I was probably doomed to this lifestyle. I'm not complaining though. It's convenient, close to the coffee maker, and I can quickly walk to the toilet. Apart from a little conversation, I don't need anything else in everyday life.
But I'm left wanting more. Sitting at a desk all the time is bad for my joints, muscles and eyes. This may have an adverse effect on my mental health. And this will do nothing to solve the problem of the spread of infection among middle-aged people, which doctors constantly tell me is approaching.
It's time for change. Not for my job. I love my job and don't plan to do anything else. No, what needs to change is how I view my time outside of work hours, and that's why I'm glad I discovered it's fun and insanely useful. go have fun application.

This is part of a regular series of articles highlighting apps we couldn't live without. Read them all here.
Go Jauntly is an app for the great outdoors. This is the little help I need to discover nature-filled hiking trails and enjoy new and interesting walking challenges. With unlimited walking routes, the app helps people get outside every day. You can say goodbye to bulky walk maps that never collapse back to their original size and say hello to a pocket-sized encyclopedia of city walks.
The app has a range of features to help you walk. They're simple, easy to navigate, and all accessible through the navigation bar located at the bottom of the app.
The first is a map tab that allows users to find places to go near home or where they vacation. Each walk is marked with a Go Jauntly logo, and if you zoom out, these logos will group together and change their indicators to numbers. To make navigation easier, all you have to do is click on one of these numbers and the map will automatically zoom in on that area.
Once you find a walk you enjoy, you can make it a “fast route” or a “green route.” The latter will automatically guide you through green areas if they are not too circuitous. The layout of the map makes it easy to decide which route will suit you best.
Another feature of Go Jauntly is the Walks tab, which offers a series of links to help you explore the world around you. These links are collections of walks curated by the Go Jauntly team, helping to take the guesswork out of finding a good walk. I'm a big fan of this.
Up the ante and take on the challenge
In almost every aspect of my life, I like to compete to keep my motivation strong. So, I was happy to see a Challenges tab built into the heart of the app. There are ready-made challenges available here, including the 2025 Walk, the Christmas Challenge, and the Winter Journey. You can even create your own challenge if you're feeling adventurous.
To track your progress, you can connect to a fitness tracker or, if you prefer the more advanced route, add walks manually. As you complete a task, Go Jauntly will reward you with badges so you can visually see your progress. I'm a badge lover, so I was caught hook, line and sinker.
Discover hiking trails
Go Jauntly is 100% free, but if you want to support the app's mission and unlock additional features, you can upgrade to a Premium subscription. It costs $4.99/£4.99 per month or $29.99/£20.99 per year.
A Premium subscription provides 100% access to curated walking routes, the ability to create circular routes using AI, and functionality that allows users to upload their favorite routes for offline use.
Walking is fun, free and easy. It's good for us both physically and mentally, and if walking is an alternative to traveling in the car, it's good for the planet too. Go Jauntly helped me fall in love with walking, and I'm sure it will do the same for you.
