As someone who wasn't old enough to play it when it came out, I naturally have fond memories of the original Red Dead Redemption, so when a remaster was announced, I was naturally ready to download it on day one.
That's right – in case you somehow missed the news, Red Dead Redemption has been remastered for modern consoles, but it's also available on Android or iOS. It's a little more expensive than the typical mobile game, but it's free for Netflix subscribers, who can download it from the service's app on phones or tablets.
However, after trying to play through the first few missions of Undead Nightmare, one issue with the port makes me wish for the old PS3 I first played it on. Luckily, this problem can be easily solved with one small add-on that you can pick up first.
Keep under control
This little addition is a controller for mobile games, so you don't have to rely on touch controls for mobile games.
There are a variety of options, including ones that hold your phone like a dock, ones that you connect to your phone via Bluetooth to keep it separate, and standard console controllers that you can also use on mobile devices. You can visit our list best mobile controllers to see the different options we recommend.
Our favorite at the moment is GameSir G8 Galileowhich is easy to use and works without problems with a number of mobile gaming services. Personally, I haven't used it in Red Dead… but I would like to.
Touch control
Naturally, for a mobile game, Red Dead Redemption uses on-screen controls to let you take control of John Marston. There are different buttons for aiming, shooting, filming, jumping, diving behind cover; Anyone who has played mobile games understands this. But Red Dead isn't a mobile game, it's a console game ported to mobile devices, so it has many more different controls than can be displayed on a phone screen.
My few hours with Undead Nightmare were… well, a nightmare. There are so many different icons popping up that it's hard to figure out which one will be, or remember where each one will appear when you need to press them in a hurry. And aiming and shooting at the same time is almost impossible due to the location of the buttons. I spent an hour stumbling around like a drunk, missing almost every shot, and being attacked by zombies multiple times.
If I had bought a game controller for my phone before playing Red Dead Redemption, I would have avoided all of these issues. When I used controllers in other games, it was so smooth and easy that it felt like I was playing on a handheld console, which is exactly how Red Dead should be experienced.
As an experiment, I also tried Red Dead on a tablet, and the experience was perhaps worse. The controls were awkwardly spread out over a wide area and I had to bend my arms into weird positions to do anything. I'd like the controller even more then – although it's worth noting that most mobile controllers don't work on tablets, since they also serve as a stand for developers.
Christmas is approaching and if you want to use the break to enjoy the new mobile port, I can't recommend buying a controller enough to make the most of it.
