My cleaning procedure usually includes several of my own sprays, because I want something powerful, which cuts out grease and dirt. My Mil visited and saw how I mixed the bleach and ammonia. She said that the chemical smell was too strong and sharply criticized me for mixing them.
Is there a real danger here?
Bleach + ammonia
There is a danger to mix the bleach and ammonia, but many people do not know this. All this is due to the chemical reactions that may arise.
Both the bleach and ammonia are strong on its own. Then they are mixed together, a toxic gas is produced, known as chloram. This can represent various health risks.
Toxic couples occur
Chlohramine, when formed, is toxic. This can lead to problems such as:
- Annoyed eyes
- Severe respiratory distress
- Watery eyes
- Pain in the chest
- Nausea
If you expose a toxic chemical reaction for a long time, it can even cause damage to the respiratory tract!

Dangers added
Often people mix chemicals, not knowing about a dangerous chemical reaction. Then they begin to clean in a room where there is not enough ventilation. The more you inhale, the serious the conditions can be. In addition, this can aggravate other health problems, such as asthma.
Mixing ammonia and bleach does not lead to a more powerful cleaning agent.
Here are a few best practices:
- Read the labels
- Create a lot of ventilation
- Contact the local poisons control if you have experienced an exposition and serious symptoms.
Although it may be scary to find out that you have created a toxic chemical reaction, there are many products that you can mix – for example, vinegar and food soda. If you are not sure what chemicals you can mix, it is best to adhere to the product for cleaning in the store (and do not mix it with anything).
