Seduction is a prequel Dangerous Liaisons – so of course it would be a dangerous (pun intended) degree of intimacy. Isabelle de Merteuil (Anamaria Bartholomew) and Madame de Rosemonde (Diane Kruger), sex is power and the social currency they use to get into the upper echelons of society.
From the moment we pressed play on HBO Max show, there were a lot of partially clothed bodies. However, as we get closer Seduction In episode three, these scenes become much more subtle and layered.
Lucas Bravo says filming Seduction scenes was a 'mind game'
“We had a lot of discussions beforehand,” Bravo tells me. “We had an intimacy coordinator who would literally send us long pages of questions asking, ‘Where do I consent to be touched? What can I touch? What do I want? What am I trying to avoid? It was very accurate.
“We would meet each other in this gym and with mattresses we would see how we could wrestle on the floor and throw ourselves around and stuff like that. We were very conscious of what we could and couldn't do and what we wanted the show to look like. There were no surprises that day, and the intimacy coordinator was always there.
I find what Bravo says next particularly interesting given the ongoing debate in the industry about whether intimacy coordinators are always needed in these situations.
“But we are mature actors and I know that intimacy coordinators are there for people who may not feel safe and need a third party. For us, we had this conversation beforehand and we were very happy with what we wanted and how shocking we wanted certain scenes to be. So as soon as we started filming, we felt completely safe.
“Don’t get me wrong, there are always moments. As I strangled Diana all day, I told myself: “You are still a good person. You're still a good person.” He's a character, but he plays tricks on your mind. where does Gercourt begin and where should I start?
Filming these scenes feels as intense as watching them, especially the love interactions in Seduction often turn sour.
Oddly enough, I'm very proud of Bravo. This is undoubtedly one of his best performances and I'm so glad that audiences around the world see him as something different than Gabriel in the film. Emily in Paris. He plays an incredibly convincing and manipulative villain, and it's clear he put effort into it.
