How Republicans Tricked Jasmine Crockett Into Running For Senate

The Republicans' plan to push their preferred candidate, Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett, to run for the Senate apparently worked.

National Republican Senate Committee (NRSC) began including Crockett's name in survey The Daily Caller News Foundation first reported it in July and it showed her leading in a hypothetical Democratic primary. Since then, the NRSC has been working behind the scenes to force Crockett into the Democratic Senate primary, according to a NOTUS report Tuesday. report.

“When we saw the results, we thought, 'Okay, we need to spread this everywhere,'” a source familiar with the process told the publication.

Crockett was considered the “easiest GOP opponent” for a sitting Republican senator. John Cornynwho is seeking re-election despite a contested primary against the Texas attorney general. A source familiar also told NOTUS that phone calls and text messages were sent to active voters and Democrats in Texas, imploring them to get Crockett into the race.

“This was a really long-term effort that we organized across the entire ecosystem over several months,” a source told the publication. “Not only did it receive positive news coverage, but it directly brought traffic to her office in the form of phone calls urging her to run.”

When the Daily Caller asked about the NRSC report and its polling, the committee's communications director, Joanna Rodriguez, pointed to Crockett's own remarks about Democrats' chances against John Cornyn.

“Crockett herself has said that no Texas Democrat will defeat John Cornyn, and her threat to the U.S. Senate now makes it clearer than ever that Cornyn is the only conservative who will keep Texas red and protect President Trump's Senate majority,” Rodriguez said.

Her statement was a reference to Crockett's comments on Politico's “The Conversation” podcast, hosted by Dasha Burns on Oct. 30.

On the podcast, Crockett discussed her potential Senate bid against Cornyn, saying, “I'll be honest with you and tell you that I don't think there's a Democrat who can beat Cornyn.”

She added that her decision to run would depend on internal polls showing viability in the general election and not just the Democratic primary, stressing: “For me, I would make a decision at the very last minute because it's not just about winning the primary. You have to win the general election.”

Texas State Representative James Talarico also running for Senate and former Democrat Representative Colin Allred suspended his campaign against Cornyn hours before Crockett announced his candidacy, citing a desire to avoid a divisive primary that could harm the Democratic nominee. Following his departure, Allred announced that he would instead run in the Democratic primary for Texas' 33rd Congressional District. Julie Johnson, who currently represents the 32nd District but is seeking the 33rd District afterward. redistricting.

Crockett The entry into the Senate race has sparked renewed debate among Democrats about their prospects for returning to the Senate in 2026 and also raised questions about whether party members should challenge her nomination.
