The House Ethics Committee opened an investigation into Rep. Corey Mills (R-Fla.) following the censure attempt. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), who accused him of “a troubling series of allegations of ethical, legal and personal improprieties.”
The drama unfolded on the House floor Wednesday as Mace permission in order to obtain a vote on censure was read, which was looking for strip Mills of his seats on the House Armed Services Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee.
'You're a disgrace,' South Carolina congressman said her colleague from Florida as they stood at arm's length, ABC News reported.
Wall Street JournalOlivia Beavers reported that Mace also whispered, “You piece of shit.”
Mills said Mace treated him “extremely vulgarly” on the floor, saying: “Everything from the P word to POS to FU…”
The Ethics Committee's investigation began just hours before the vote to censure Mills, which was instead transmitted to the committee by a vote of 310 to 103, Washington Post reported.
The transfer will not allow the lower chamber to “express its opinion on the public rebuke of the congressman,” ABC News notes.
The committee intends to examine numerous allegations made against Mills since he took office in 2023, including whether he violated the House code of conduct or any law following allegations that he “failed to adequately disclose required information to the House of Representatives,” according to the statement. VaPo:
The investigation will also examine whether he violated campaign finance laws during the 2022 and 2024 campaigns, improperly solicited and/or received gifts, including in connection with officially sponsored private travel, used his position to obtain special favors, engaged in misconduct regarding allegations of sexual harassment and/or dating violence, and abused congressional resources or status.
Mace's censure resolution and Wednesday's letter to House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-Los Angeles) detail the above allegations, as well as the “stolen valor” allegations.
“These allegations are false and misrepresent the nature of my interactions,” Mills said in a statement to ABC News.
