Hiking trails near Prince George, B.C. closed after grizzly bear attack

The British Columbia Conservation Service says trails in the Mount McGregor area, northeast of Prince George, will be closed after two hikers were attacked by a grizzly bear.

A post on social media said the attack happened on Saturday.

The service says its so-called problem animal specialist team is investigating the bear attack and is advising people to cancel any hikes planned in the Pass Lake area “out of an abundance of caution.”

It said the area would remain closed until the investigation was completed, but did not provide any further details about the status of the tourists and did not immediately respond to requests for an interview.

The latest data posted on the British Columbia government's website shows that between January and August, conservation officers received 400 calls regarding conflicts with grizzly bears.

Officers attended 81 of those calls, resulting in the destruction of a total of 15 bears, records show.
