Here’s what could have protected Kirby Dach from injury

During Saturday's game against the Boston Bruins, Kirby Duck sacrificed himself for his club.

He blocked a shot in the second period and it looked like it hurt. But Duch still finished the game for the Canadiens and finished with nearly 15 minutes of playing time (14:43).

The next day we learned that he would miss four to six weeks of performances due to a broken foot.

It's hard to hear this news, especially when it comes to a guy who can't stay healthy. He blocked the shot and it's not “his fault” in the sense that he's still out of the game now.

But…

On the other hand, Antoine Roussel explains (via TVA Sports) that Dach could have avoided this injury by wearing shot blockers. We're talking about equipment that allows guys to better defend themselves when blocking shots.

The equipment in question is not mandatory for major league guys.

Some American League clubs force their players to wear them… but that's not the case in the National League.

However, I wonder how many Canadiens players wear this coin.

Nick Suzuki nearly broke his leg against the Flyers on Nov. 4, and his absence would have hurt the Canadiens on the ice greatly. The captain would also have broken his streak of active games, and seeing him lose in battle would have been a real disaster.

However, it's often said that players' health should come first… and that's why all guys should wear shot blockers to further protect themselves. Especially fragile guys like Kirby Dach.

Because it is true that history could have turned out differently if Dach had been better protected…
