Health Canada recalls ‘laughing gas’ sold without authorization – National

Health Canada Nearly a dozen laughing gas products have been recalled. it says they are sold for entertainment purposes without permission, posing a serious safety risk.

According to Health Canada, nitrous oxide is approved for use when prescribed by an authorized health care professional, including during medical and dental procedures for sedation and pain relief.

Some of the recalled products were sold as “cream fillers” under brand names such as “Bamboozle” and “Gold Whip,” as well as candy and fruit flavors including “Lemon Mint Ice,” “Strawberry” and “Passion Fruit.”

Others included in the review are unflavored.

The government prohibits the inhalation of nitrous oxide products for recreational purposes and that users should immediately seek medical attention from a healthcare professional if they have used such products recreationally or medically and experience any side effects.

According to previous government statement warning of the risks of using nitrous oxide recreationally, adverse side effects may include birth defects, bowel and bladder dysfunction, heart attack and stroke, nerve damage, loss of consciousness and in some cases, death.

Nitrous oxide can also be found in cream dispensers and other food tools where it is not intended to be inhaled, and has common street names including laughing gas, whippets, NOSE, hippie crack, and nang.
