Harris County Treasurer Carla Wyatt charged with car burglary, records show

The Harris County treasurer seeking re-election in 2026 has no primary opponent in March, but she was facing criminal charges Monday night. Carla Wyatt is accused of burglary of a vehicle.

As treasurer, Carla Wyatt manages Harris County's money, but now she also handles criminal defense.

Wyatt is charged with burglary of a vehicle after investigators said she was in a Washington Avenue parking lot Saturday when she opened the unlocked door of a minivan and went inside. The owner and witnesses called the police.

Investigators say Wyatt denied any wrongdoing and told them she had permission to be in the Toyota minivan. The owner told investigators she did not know Wyatt and did not give her permission.

Wyatt didn't answer the door to her home when an ABC13 crew visited, and her office staff said she was out of work.

The District Attorney's Office provided ABC13 with a statement that said:

“We are aware that Carla Wyatt has been arrested and charged with theft of a vehicle. Because this matter is pending, our office will not comment further on the details of the investigation.

What we can say is this: The pursuit of justice in Harris County is driven by the law and evidence, not by political affiliation, public office or partisanship. No one is above the law. No one is exempt from responsibility. Our responsibility is and always will be to the people in this community.”

Wyatt has been released on bail and will be arraigned later this week. It is unknown why she allegedly broke into the car; she did not respond to phone calls, text messages or messages from the ABC13 team.

Wyatt was charged with driving under the influence in 2023 and violating bail conditions in 2024, but the case was dismissed in August after she completed a pretrial diversion program, according to court records.
