Halifax pilot draws Blue Jays logo in the sky

A Halifax pilot and lifelong Blue Jays fan took his support for the Canadian baseball team to new heights – quite literally – by painting the team's logo in the skies over Nova Scotia.

“I wanted to cheer for the Blue Jays, I wanted to cheer on the fans, I wanted to do it for myself,” Dimitri Neonakis said.

The two-and-a-half hour trip took about three hours before he took off from Halifax Stanfield International Airport at 11:27 a.m. local time Tuesday, Neonakis said.

He started by outlining the maple leaf—the hardest part, he said—before carefully tracing the bird on the team logo on his Cirrus SR22. His route stretched approximately 570 kilometers and ran from Halifax to the city of Debert and back.

While still in the air tracking the bird, Neonakis says someone sent him a message asking if he was the author of the drawing.

“I said, 'I'm a big fan. Of course,” he said with a laugh.

The 27-year pilot says the flight route has gotten more attention than most others online, but it's not his first of its kind.

He says he has completed about 30 of these “sky paintings,” some in support of missing children or in honor of people such as George Floyd, Terry Fox and Jennifer Casey, a member of the Snowbirds who died in the 2020 disaster.

Sometimes, like the Jays, he takes to the air for fun—drawing hearts, holiday greetings, or Father's Day wishes.
